Nanotechnology Research & Applications

Nanotechnology involves materials, devices, and systems engineered at the nanometer scale (1-100nm) where unique physical, chemical, and biological properties emerge. ASTI conducts nanotechnology research focused on carbon-based nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, nanosensors, nanocomposites, and energy applications with direct relevance to aerospace, defense, and healthcare systems.

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology exploits phenomena that occur when materials are structured at dimensions comparable to molecules and atoms. At this scale, quantum mechanical effects, surface-to-volume ratios, and interfacial properties dominate material behavior, enabling unprecedented control over:

Electrical conductivity
Mechanical strength
Optical properties
Chemical reactivity
Thermal characteristics

Nanomaterials and nanosystems offer transformative capabilities including ultra-high strength-to-weight ratios for structural materials, enhanced electrical and thermal conductivity, quantum-confined optical and electronic properties, extremely high surface areas for catalysis and sensing, and tunable properties through precise engineering.

Applications span: electronics and photonics, energy generation and storage, sensors and diagnostics, structural composites, coatings and surface treatments, drug delivery and biomedicine, and environmental remediation.

Core Research Capabilities

ASTI provides end-to-end research and development services including:

Carbon Nanomaterials Synthesis and application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, carbon nanofibers, fullerenes, and graphene oxide for electronics, composites, energy storage, and sensing.

Nanoelectronics Development of nanoscale transistors, interconnects, quantum dots, and molecular electronics for next-generation computing and communications systems.

Nanosensors Chemical sensors, biosensors, pressure sensors, and radiation detectors leveraging nanomaterial properties for enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and miniaturization.

Nanocomposites Integration of nanomaterials into polymer, ceramic, and metal matrices to create lightweight structural materials, electromagnetic shielding, thermal management systems, and multifunctional composites.

Energy Nanotechnology Nanostructured electrodes for batteries and supercapacitors, photovoltaic materials, thermoelectric devices, and hydrogen storage materials.

Nanofabrication Synthesis techniques including chemical vapor deposition, sol-gel processing, electrospinning, and self-assembly plus top-down patterning via lithography and etching.

Characterization Advanced microscopy (SEM, TEM, AFM), spectroscopy (Raman, XPS, FTIR), X-ray diffraction, and electrical/mechanical testing to validate nanomaterial properties.

ASTI partners with materials suppliers, device manufacturers, aerospace companies, and research institutions to transition nanotechnology from laboratory to operational systems.
